MATTAWA — Jorge Augustin Rojas, 41, Mattawa was shot in the hand Friday after being accused of taking part in an affair.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office released the information Monday afternoon.

Law enforcement was notified of a shooting victim seeking help at the Mattawa Medical Clinic at roughly 6 p.m. A deputy arrived to find Rojas injured and being treated.

Rojas claimed to be walking at the city limits of Mattawa when an acquaintance drove up to him and said the need to talk about something important, according to Grant County Undersheriff John Turley.

Sergio David Perez, 41, Mattawa, allegedly drove Rojas to an orchard outside of town, accused him of “seeing” his wife, who is separated from Perez, then ordered him out of the car. Perez reportedly pulled a pistol from the vehicle trunk and fired several times, Rojas told the deputy.

“Rojas escaped being mortally wounded when he extended one of his hands to fend off the shot and was shot instead in that hand,” Turley stated.

Rojas allegedly fell, Perez fired several times without hitting Rojas and drove away.

The victim called a friend for help from a cellphone and was taken to the clinic.

He was eventually transported to a hospital in Yakima, where he is reported to be in satisfactory condition.

Deputies were unable to locate Perez, who was last seen driving a gold four-door 2005 Chevrolet Impala with a Washington license plate of 580-WBQ.

The sheriff’s office asks people seeing the vehicle, or with information about the event, to call 9-1-1.
