YAKIMA, Wash. — The Quincy Jacks boys basketball team moved through the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A state tournament consolation bracket Thursday morning with a 42-32 win over the Hockinson Hawks.

Quincy eliminated Hockinson from the state tournament with the victory.

The Jacks, winners of the Central Washington Athletic Conference tournament championship, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when senior Daniel Guzman sank a 3-point field goal to start the game. Hockinson quickly narrowed the gap to 3-2 and the Jacks would not lead by more than three points during the first quarter.

Hockinson closed the gap to tie the game at 6-6 before Quincy senior and tournament leading scorer Eric Martin put the Jacks ahead 8-6 at the end of the first. Martin leads all scorers with 23.0 points per game through the second round of the state tournament.

Just 20 seconds into the second, the Hawks pulled even with the Jacks at 8-8. Hockinson eventually took their first lead of the game after Josh Hall put back on offensive rebound.

Quincy regained the lead just 14 seconds later when junior Jay Cedargreen sank a jumper from behind the 3-point arc for an 11-10 Quincy lead. Cedargreen’s 3-pointer sparked a 10-0 Quincy run and the Jacks took an 18-10 lead into the half.

Hockinson started the second  half on a 6-2 run to pull within 20-16 before Martin and senior Jesse Gonzales united to give Quincy a 26-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Martin and Gonzales continued to lead the Jacks during the final eight minutes. Gonzales and Martin hit back-to-back shots to push Quincy’s lead to 30-18 — Quincy’s largest lead of the game.

Hockinson continuously attempted cut the deficit to single digits. However, each time Hockinson managed to pull closer, Martin and the Jacks pulled away.

Quincy eliminated the Hawks with the 42-32 victory and the Jacks advanced in the state tournament.

The Jacks returned to the court this morning in another loser-out consolation game, this time with Pullman at 9 a.m.

With a win over Pullman, Quincy would guarantee themselves a tournament trophy.

Quincy head coach Wade Petersen was unavailable for comment.
