Palmer wins 3 events at Bonners Ferry

The Troy High School track and field team opened the season on Saturday in northern Idaho at the Bonners Ferry Invitational.

Aaron Palmer got his season off to a good start with a trio of first-place finishes to earn the meet’s top athlete award. Palmer took first in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), long jump (19-10) and triple jump (41-11 1/4).

Teammate Scotty Harper played in the same three events and gave the Trojans a 1-2 finish in the long jump. Harper went 19-7 to finish runner-up in the long jump and also placed third in the triple jump (39-6 1/2) and tied for eighth in the high jump (5-2). Harper also placed in a fourth event by finishing eighth in the 100-yard dash at 12.79 seconds.

Cullen Metz had personal-best marks in both the shot put and discus. Metz beat his previous best in the shot by about 5 feet with a distance of 45-2 1/2 to finish in second place. He took third in the discus with a throw of 121-0 1/2.

Ryan Rayson tied for fourth in the high jump by clearing 5-4. Coby Garrison placed seventh in the 1600-meter run at 5:52. Cody Orr ended up eighth in the 3200-meter run at 11:48.

The Trojans placed fourth as a team with 65 points. Timberlake won the eight-team meet with 227.5 points.

For the girls, Allie Maestas placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.79. She represented Troy’s only points. The Lady Trojans tied for sixth in the team standings with five points. Timberlake won with 252.5 points.

Troy’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday at the Frenchtown Invitational. The Plains Co-ed Relays originally scheduled for Thursday were cancelled.

Troy Softball Takes Two From Drummond

The Drummond High School softball team rolled into Troy Saturday with high hopes of ending a long streak of being on the wrong end of the score, and for half of the first game of the doubleheader, looked like they had every chance of doing just that. However the host Trojans exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then shut down Drummond in the top of the fifth, winning 14-3. Troy kept the bats hot in the second game, plating 21 runs to end that game early as well, 21-11.
