Two Eagle readies for districts

PABLO — There is another track team in the valley and the Two Eagle River tracksters know how to throw their weight around. Three Eagles and a Lady Eagle have competed in the javelin, discus and the shot put all season, and are geared up for the 14-C District tournament today in Polson.
The team’s two top varsity athletes are Robert Howard and Adrian Corcoran. The two are skilled with a javelin in hand, both recording over 40-foot tosses in practice. Under the pressures of a meet, Howard’s best toss was 36-10 and Corcoran’s was just two inches shy of his teammate’s.
“One is real quick (Corcoran) and one is just brute strong (Howard),” Two Eagle River head coach Don Miller said.
Miller has high expectations for the duo today.
“I fully expect them to qualify for divisionals. It’s pretty much a lead-pipe cinch,” Miller said.
Charlo’s throwing coach, Mike Krahn, has helped train the two top dogs this season. Assistance, which isn’t common place in other sports, was a big help and is a testament to the nature of track and field, Miller said.
“It is old school. In track the kids all cheer each other’s performances. It’s not cutthroat. They like to see each other do well,” Miller said.
The only Lady Eagle on the team is freshman Sierra Webster.
Webster has placed at every JV meet the team has attended whether at shot, discus or javelin
“At one meet she’ll place in one event. In one meet she’ll place at another,” Miller said of his versatile thrower.
So far she’s landed a season high shot put at 20 feet and 10 inches, and broken the 60-foot mark with both the javelin and discus. Miller said she has the ambition and genetics to keep improving and then some.
“I’m fairly certain her mom still has Ronan’s school record in the javelin. I think if I can start her running, she can run all day,” he said.
Finishing up Two Eagle’s roster is freshman Marcus Brown, another strong competitor at the JV level.
Brown’s taken fourth in the discus at one of the JV competitions, which he has thrown to 83 feet. He’s also launched the javelin 96 feet in competition.
Brown will be an asset to the Ronan-Mission track and field team next year, where he is planning to transfer, Miller said.
The Two-Eagle track program is new, just a few years in the making. Though 26 athletes went out at the beginning of the year, Miller is happy with the core that remains.
“The kids that are out right now are very dedicated to track,” he said.
The team had a taste of higher competition at the Seeley Swan invite in Missoula last weekend, one last big meet to prepare for the district.
The athletes look to earn themselves a spot at divisionals in today’s tournament.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. in Polson.

16-year-old finishes atop Spring Mack Days
POLSON - For a 16-year-old to put in a 12-day total of 714 lake trout and take the honors of top fisherman in the 2009 Spring Mack Days tournament might seem like an astonishing feat, but for those who have shared Flathead Lake with him, it may not have been a huge surprise that Pablo's Stephen Naethe did just that.

ST. IGNATIUS — Over a weekend of basketball in their hometown, the Lady Bulldogs took a 55-44 win on Friday over Ronan, then went down 46-33 on Saturday to Charlo.
Polson wrestlers throw down
The Polson wrestling team sent varsity athletes to Bozeman while JV wrestlers stayed local to compete in the Mission Takedown Tournament in St. Ignatius. In Bozeman, the wrestlers placed two and took 13th as a team. At St. Ignatius, Polson placed three and no team score was awarded due to technical difficulties in scorekeeping.
