Troy girls qualify three for state tennis tourney

The Troy High School girls tennis team qualified one singles player and one doubles team for this week’s Class B-C state tournament.

Cassidy Hand advances to state after a fourth-place finish in singles on Saturday at the B-C divisional in Troy. Hand received a first-round bye and then defeated Eureka’s Angela Bailey, 6-2, 6-1, to guarantee her ticket to Missoula. Hand fell to Eureka’s Casey Armstrong in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-0, and to Mission’s Yasmine Elmenshawy in the consolation final, 6-2, 7-5.

In doubles, Liz Smith and Ande Hawkins qualified for state with a runner-up finish. Smith and Hawkins opened with a 6-0, 6-0 rout over Mission’s Annika Kleinstuch and C.J. Thompson and then downed Eureka’s Cami Stacy and Elizabeth Houser, 7-5, 6-4, in an exciting semifinal match. Mission’s Anna Fehrs and Sarah Bowers outlasted Smith and Hawkins in the championship match, 6-3, 6-4.

The top four individuals and top three doubles teams qualified for state. Troy’s doubles team of Tara Duzan and Jackie Pepiot just missed qualifying with a fourth-place finish. Duzan and Pepiot got a first-round bye, lost to Fehrs and Bowers in the semis, 6-3, 6-2, and then dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to Stacy and Houser, 6-4, 6-3.

In singles, Jessica Lyons endured a very tough loss when eliminated in the second round with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 setback to Eureka’s Karina Hofstee.

Eureka won the team title with 36 points. Mission was second with 29 and Troy third at 23.

Troy Softball Takes Two From Drummond

The Drummond High School softball team rolled into Troy Saturday with high hopes of ending a long streak of being on the wrong end of the score, and for half of the first game of the doubleheader, looked like they had every chance of doing just that. However the host Trojans exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then shut down Drummond in the top of the fifth, winning 14-3. Troy kept the bats hot in the second game, plating 21 runs to end that game early as well, 21-11.
