Dorothy Bain, 97, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell. She was born Oct. 22, 1911, in a log house at Proctor, the oldest of four children of John and Ruth (Radel) Riebe.
The family homesteaded in the Niarada area of Montana, and she spent her childhood largely at her grandparents', attending school in a one-room school at Hog Heaven District. She graduated from Flathead County High School in 1930. She taught school for two years near Cut Bank, at a one-room rural school.
On April 18, 1934, she married Arthur Bain in Kalispell, where they always lived. Their home became home for their brothers and sisters and other relatives. They raised three sons, Addison, Stan and Daryl.
Dorothy maintained a monogramming service for 25 years, lettering bowling shirts, uniforms and baseball suits. She made some 30 banners for Whitefish High School and many for the Presbyterian Church, along with other special displays for businesses and various clubs.
She was baptized and joined the First Presbyterian Church in 1930, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon. She was active in the PTA, several community projects, and was a member of the Century Club for many years.
Needing transportation, Dorothy took adult drivers education and got her driver's license on her 70th birthday.
Her biggest joy was preparing dinners for the family. Hobbies were crocheting, sewing, crafts and enjoying her flowers. She monogrammed towels for all the families, made everyone crocheted afghans and quilts and enjoyed writing poems about the family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; two brothers, Martin Riebe and Charles Riebe; a sister-in-law, Joyce Reynolds; and three brothers-in-law, Louie Bain, Richard Bain and Neal Bain.
She leaves three sons and their wives, Addison and Sharon Bain of Melbourne, Fla., Stan and Sharon Bain of Elmo, and Daryl and Brenda Bain of Kalispell; five grandchildren, Kristie, Dennis and Randy of Kalispell, Debra of Washington, and Scott; three great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Francis Riebe, and wife, Rosemary, of Polson; four sisters-in-law, Helen Riebe and Evelyn Shephard of Kalispell, Alvina Cyr of Missoula, and Annette Wilson Bain of Marion; a brother-in-law, Oakford Bain, and wife, Jackie, of New Jersey; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Memorial services for Dorothy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Glenn Burfeind officiating. A reception will follow services, and an urn burial will follow the reception at Glacier Memorial Gardens.
The family requests memorial contributions be sent to Home Options Hospice, 175 Commons Loop, Suite 100, Kalispell, MT 59901; or to Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.
