Boys Soccer: Glacier cools Flathead

One way to stay warm is to keep moving, and the Glacier boys soccer team heated up right from the start on Thursday.

The second-place Wolfpack scored three quick goals in the opening 10 minutes and picked up a 4-1 Western AA victory against Flathead on a chilly night at Legends Stadium.

"This is one of our better performances of the year I think," Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke said. "We seemed to control the ball, had lots of opportunities on goal. That's all you can ask for."

Glacier (6-2) completed a season sweep of Flathead (1-7) and has now won four straight against its crosstown rival. The Wolfpack leads the series 4-2 overall.

On Thursday, junior forward Brad Holmgren started it off by chipping a penalty kick into the upper left of the goal for a score at five minutes in. Three minutes later, sophomore Joe Siderius somehow snuck a pass between two defenders to teammate Ron Howell, who took one step and scored in a second.

By this point, the legs were warm and the feet were on fire and it showed as Glacier's top scorer, senior Josh Neiman, fielded a pass from Seth Baumgartner from about 20 yards out and soared a shot past Flathead's diving goalie.

"I think this is the best our offense has played so far this year," said Neiman, who has five goals this season. "We're kind of an underestimated team up to this point so hopefully we can change that."

Glacier junior Sam Burch scored the Wolfpack's fourth goal off an assist from Tanner Maroney. Goalie Sean Peters made a number of big diving stops and finished with five saves.

"Definitely hustle was a big part of it," O'Rourke said. "You play 80 minutes, it's a lot of time. There's no breaks, there's no pauses, so you have to be mentally engaged the whole time. And I think we did that well today."

Flathead scored late in the second on a penalty kick goal by Jerrad Merrill.

"We just didn't link things together like we have been. It just wasn't our best game overall," Flathead coach Chris Putzler said. "We had defensive breakdowns with those goals early and I think that got us pretty frustrated."

Glacier heads to Helena Capital (3-3-1) while Flathead plays at Helena High (4-2-1) on Saturday.
