Road complaints precede fatal crash

A 39-year-old Flathead Valley man died in a two-car crash north of Olney at 1:47 p.m. Sunday.
The man's identity will not be released until all family members have been notified.
Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Lacie Alby said an alert had been broadcast earlier, warning of a reckless driver on U.S. 93 headed south from Eureka.
The driver reportedly was making unsafe passes in his truck, not staying in his lane of traffic and forcing other drivers off the shoulder, Alby said.
Three more complaints came in as Alby was responding, she said.
As she drove through Whitefish, she received an update that there had been a head-on crash. It turned out to be a sideswipe accident, she said, in which the man's pickup truck collided with a car in front as the truck attempted to pass near mile marker 147.
Both vehicles went into the east-side ditch, she said. The pickup driver was not wearing a seat belt and was killed at the scene. He was alone in the truck.
The two people in the car, who are new to the area, were taken by Whitefish ambulance to North Valley Hospital where they were checked for injuries and released, she said.
Alby's investigation found that the car that was struck and the car immediately behind the pickup both had switched on their four-way flashers to warn other drivers. The car in front reportedly had slowed down just before the pickup driver attempted the pass.
The Olney Fire Department also was called to the scene.
Investigation continues into whether alcohol could have been a factor in the crash.
