Glacier freezes Bison

It seemed fitting that the team most comfortable playing in the freezing cold on Friday night was named Glacier.
With mounds of snow surrounding the football field at Legends Stadium and temperatures hovering around 10 degrees, the Glacier Wolfpack, celebrating their homecoming no less, rolled over the Great Falls Bison 34-7 in AA football.
The Bison (0-7) scored on the opening drive, but went numb after that. Not Glacier. The fifth-ranked Wolfpack settled in and scored five unanswered touchdowns, and grabbed its third straight win to improve to 5-2.
"It definitely hit us at first and we were just trying to get into the feel. And then once we did, we just rolled and got into it," said senior running back Wiley Fusaro, who had a game-high 94 yards rushing and started the scoring for Glacier.
"Getting out there, you're pretty warm so it's not too bad," said senior Connor Fuller.
"Since I was a little kid watching Flathead play in the playoffs in weather like this I've always wanted to play like this, so it was awesome."
The Wolfpack looked as well-rounded as it has this season and finished with 346 yards of total offense while the defense forced four turnovers, which makes that 10 in two games. Senior Freddie Blodnick had two interceptions and junior Boyce Ballard added a third while a pack of lineman recovered a fumble in the second quarter.
"I thought it was a real workmanlike effort," Glacier coach Grady Bennett said. "Two weeks in a row we've given up that first big touchdown right away but the kids never got rattled. Last week we answered right away and this week we put together just a methodical drive and answered right back."
The Wolfpack offense didn't leave the field too often thanks to a balanced air-to-ground attack. Senior quarterback Shay Smithwick-Hann was 14-for-23 for 161 yards and had a touchdown in the air while rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown. Senior Taylor Hart had 11 carries for 45 yards and chipped in two touchdowns in the third quarter.
"I think that's why our offense is pretty tough to stop right now because you have to worry about both. You have our run game which is pretty solid and then our pass game is pretty solid," Bennett said. "So I like our mix right now and I like the different athletes that we can get the ball to."
After the game, the Wolfpack huddled in front of the dedicated fans who stuck around and gave them a hardy cheer. But not for too long. After a moment, they turned and sprinted towards the locker room ready to thaw out and celebrate their first homecoming victory as a team.
"What I love about this team is we're one," Fusaro said. "There's no lone wolf. We're all a pack and that's awesome, just to know everyone is being there for everyone."
