Platke, WHS state champs in golf

Billings Central and Whitefish repeated easily as team champions at the delayed, shortened and venue changed Class A state golf tournament Tuesday at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.

Whitefish (473), which won by 30 strokes last year, this time finished 40 ahead of Hamilton (513). Laurel (522) was a distant third in the two-day tournament, which was reduced to 27 holes because of the weather.

It was the ninth state championship for WHS under coach Terry Nelson.

The Billings Central (536) girls were even more impressive, finishing 47 strokes ahead of Sidney (583). Laurel (584) was a close third.

Billings Central edged Whitefish by nine shots to win it last year.

Individually, Katelyn Frank of Sidney, a junior, defended her title, while Whitefish sophomore Reed Platke, a runner-up in 2008, earned medalist honors.

"Excellent day for the boys," Nelson said.

"Reed Platke was real steady, came back real strong on the final nine. He had four bogies and still shot 37. The great thing about him, he's pretty unflappable."

Frank shot 79-37-166 for a four-stroke victory. Kyla Clancy, 81-39-120, of Billings Central was second, Katy Peterson, 82-42-124, of Glendive third, and Kylie McConnell, 83-45-128, of Whitefish was fourth.

Platke, 76-37-113, was four shots better than runners-up Joe Blakemore, 78-39-117, of Whitefish and Neil Martin, 78-39-117, of Sidney. Zack Maassen, 77-42-119, of Whitefish finished fourth.

Nelson was elated with Blakemore's performance.

"A senior, his first state tournament and he ends up taking second," Nelson said.

"He's one of the most mature kids I've ever coached. He's another one who doesn't get rattled. He just held it together. He buys into the be patient philosophy."

Platke missed out on a title last year by one shot.

"It feels pretty good," Platke said afterwards.

"I played well. I just hit the ball and tried to score."

Platke said the weather "didn't really bother me" and he didn't mind having the two-day event shortened by nine holes.

"I really didn't care," he said.

"That's all we had time for."

Platke said not knowing where he stood after Monday's opening session, which saw golfers complete either 14 or 15 holes, didn't matter.

"I tried to shut it out the best I could." he said.

"I guess I did it good enough."

Platke, the Northwestern A divisional champ, becomes just the third WHS player since 2000 to win a state individual title. The other two were Sam Krause and Chris Connors.

Is he sorry to see the prep season end?

"Yeah, but there's always next year."

Frank won her title a year ago in Polson by nine shots.

"It was a little nerve-wracking," she said of all the tournament distractions caused by the weather.

"I was hoping for back-to-back championships."

Frank, who played 14 holes on Monday, finished the last four Tuesday of her first 18 by going 1-under. That put her two shots in front with nine to play.

"Today, my short game," she said of what stood out the most.

"I had four birdies.

"(Considering) the weather, I played good," she said.

"Yesterday a little (more of a factor) than today. It was cold."

Whitefish's girls finished a disappointing fifth with a 619 total.

"The flu bug got us," Nelson said.

"No question we would have been a contender for the top medal spots."

Nelson said McConnell "had a couple good days. BreAnna Cameron got off to a terrible start the first day. She was 17-over after 14 holes. She got that straightened out today."
