The Charlo football team started their 2009 season off with a bang.

Touchdowns were scored on the first four Viking possessions during Friday's contest against Alberton that ended 94-6.

Charlo scored 46 points in the first quarter, 35 in the second, 13 in the third and none in the fourth. Alberton sophomore Cody Ishler scored the only points for the Panthers in the third quarter.

“Of course, we're glad to get a win,” head coach Steve Love said. “It's tough coaching on either side of a blowout.”

Charlo's defense scored 24 points in the game; the same number junior quarterback Chico Stipe put up with four touchdowns. Stipe also had 102 total yards.

Charlo managed 315 yards total with no turnovers. Sophomore running back Kolten Andrews had 104 total yards and two touchdowns on the night, including a 54-yard end zone run.

“We tried to get our starters some good reps, but only ran a few plays,” Love said.

Charlo held the Panthers to 141 offensive yards and forced seven turnovers. Viking's defense scored 24 points. Junior linebacker-CHECK Chris Hernandez-Kelley recovered three fumbles and returned two of them for touchdowns. Kelley also had four solo tackles. Senior tightend? Jame Petersen, sophomore linebacker Stephen Delaney and freshman linebacker Tra Ludeman each had an interception; Petersen and Delaney ran theirs for touchdowns.

“Our defense capitalized on their lack of experience,” Love said. “Alberton deserves a lot of respect for working as hard as they did. Our kids took care of business. It's time to focus on Lincoln.”
