Boys soccer team clinches league title, playoff berth

Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Priest River clinched a first-place finish in the Intermountain League for Bonners Ferry High School Boys’ Soccer team and first seed in the district playoffs, which occur Oct. 16 and 17.

The Badgers are 5-0 in the league and 7-3-1 overall.

Junior Alex Mendez scored the first two goals, while junior midfielder Aaron Moe, senior defender Carey Reynolds and sophomore forward Daniel Palacios each added one goal apiece.

Senior forward David Morton and junior midfielder Jesse Gondek each notched their first assists of the season.

The Badgers outshot Priest River 23–2, and all 18 players suited up saw significant playing time.

In other action, the boys defeated the St. Maries Lumberjacks Saturday.

Mendez converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute after being fouled from behind, and sophomore Andre Zarate added an insurance goal in the 69th minute off an assist from Mendez to cap the scoring.

The Badgers outshot the ‘Jacks 7–4, while the Badger defense prevented any real scoring threats. 

The boys’ team hosts Libby at 4 p.m. today, while Saturday’s IML contest with Orofino has been postponed until Oct. 10.
