Man charged in shooting

A Hungry Horse man has been charged in connection with a shooting Saturday night that left one woman injured after an argument about money apparently escalated into gunfire.

Jeremiah Rupert, 19, is facing two counts of attempted deliberate homicide after allegedly shooting at the occupants of a pickup truck as it tried to get away from Rupert's vehicle, according to the Flathead County Attorney's Office.

Rupert, who was arrested Sunday in Missoula after fleeing there following the shooting, was transferred Wednesday to the Flathead County Detention Center.

Deputy County Attorney Caleb E. Simpson said Rupert was taken into custody near the Missoula Police Department, apparently while debating whether or not to turn himself in.

The 26-year-old Libby woman injured in the alleged attack suffered wounds to her neck and upper arm from what investigators said appears to be a single bullet. She was released from Kalispell Regional Medical Center earlier this week.

According to court documents, sheriff's deputies responded shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of First Street South East in Hungry Horse.

A man driving a pickup truck told investigators Rupert had fired a pistol at his vehicle, hitting his passenger, before leaving in a late-model pickup truck of his own.

The man and woman were sitting in a parking lot across from Canyon Elementary School when Rupert pulled up next to them, according to court records. Rupert demanded $100 from the man, and an argument about whether the money was owed ensued.

Rupert allegedly threatened to shoot the man and then pointed a pistol at him - at which time the man ducked, put his truck in gear, and began to drive away.

Rupert is accused of firing at the fleeing pickup truck, hitting the woman passenger as the bullet traveled through the vehicle's back window and out the windshield.

Flathead County Sheriff Mike Meehan said Wednesday that at least one bullet was fired, and a preliminary ballistics report indicates it also would have struck the man driving the truck if he had not ducked.

Rupert's mother told authorities her son recently purchased a 9 mm pistol from a friend.

Rupert's attorney could not be reached Wednesday for comment.

Bail has been set at $100,000 pending a court appearance in Flathead County, Simpson said.

If convicted, Rupert - who has yet to be arraigned - could face up to 200 years or life in prison.

Rupert also is awaiting trial on charges filed after he and two other men allegedly threw lit artillery-shell fireworks at a squad car on patrol during the Fourth of July celebration in Hungry Horse.

Approximately 15 of the shells hit within the squad car's vicinity, according to court records.

Prosecutors say Rupert was arrested with marijuana, two marijuana pipes, and a blood-alcohol level of .13. He pleaded not guilty in July to felony criminal endangerment and misdemeanor possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and alcohol.
