Whitefish Pilot | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 15 years AGO
Whitefish Mountain Resort's Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Team garnered six overall champions at the Corn Cup freestyle competiton last weekend on Big Mountain and 22 of the total 44 top-three finishes to wrap up a strong competitve year at home.
"I was blown away on how well the team did," team coach Steve Knox said. "Not only did we bring home the bacon, two of the team's coaches won the pro-skier and pro-snowboard divisions. It's pretty awesome when you have the top two riders on the mountain on team staff."
The fifth annual Corn Cup featured a rail jam on Saturday and a slopestyle event on Sunday in the Fishbowl terrain park. Local competitors and some out-of-towners threw down their best tricks on the jumps and jibs in hopes of winning cash or prizes in the final freestyle event of the year at Big Mountain.
Next week, a group from Whitefish will travel to Colorado for the USASA National Championships at Copper Mountain. These athletes have been competing all winter in the Inland Northwest Freeride League in order to qualify for invitations to the event.
Competing in boadercross will be Baylon Connolly and Bailey Eaton. In slopestyle, local representatives will be Hayden Eaton, Danner Pickering and Meredith Reed. Events will be held April 3-9 and results will be posted daily at USASA.org.
