Winterhawks end Chiefs' season with Game 7 OT win

SPOKANE - Ty Rattie's one-timer found the back of the net with 2:24 remaining in overtime and the Portland Winterhawks eliminated the Spokane Chiefs with a 5-4 victory in Game 7 of their Western Hockey League Western Conference first-round series in front of 6,045 at the Spokane Arena on Wednesday night.

Portland finished 8-0 in Spokane this season, with the visiting team winning each game in the series.

Former Coeur d'Alene Laker Tyler Johnson opened the scoring 3:36 into the first period on an assist from Brady Brassart. Spokane's Mitch Wahl added his third goal of the series on an assist from Jared Spurgeon at the 11:03 mark to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Wahl scored his second goal of the game with assists from Brett Bartman and Kyle Beach to put Spokane on top 3-0 at 3:31 of the second period.

Portland received goals from Nino Niederreiter and Ryan Johansen to pull within 3-2 after two periods.

Beach scored his seventh goal of the series 6:50 into the third, giving Spokane a 4-2 lead.

Portland pulled within one at 9:45 on a goal from Riley Boychuk and Luke Walker scored the equalizer with a little over six minutes remaining in regulation.

Portland outshot Spokane 47-30, with James Reid stopping 42 shots for the Chiefs. Mac Carruth had 26 saves for the Winterhawks, who advance to face the Vancouver Giants in the second round of the playoffs.
