Columbia Falls, Polson win track honors

COLUMBIA FALLS - For one day at least, the weather didn't get in the way of a good track meet.

Not to be overshadowed by the uncommonly nice weather, Polson's Jason Bowman, Bigfork's Kayla Carlson and Cut Bank's Deni Fitzpatrick turned in a trio of standout performances at the (somewhat) annual Columbia Falls Invitational on Saturday.

Bowman raced across the finish line in both the 100 and 200 with winning times of 11.2 and 23.0, respectively.

Carlson, one of the top returning distance runners in the state, won the 800 in 2:25 and the 1,600 in 5:21.

The reigning state champ in the 100 and 200 dashes, Fitzpatrick became the lone three-event winner on Saturday after taking firsts in the 100 (12.4), 200 (25.8) and 110 hurdles (16.1).

On the team front, the Columbia Falls boys had four individual winners (Kodiak Gimbel, Pascal Jessat, Shawn Whitman and Derek Williams) and took both relays en route to a top score of 124 points.

The Polson girls, with three field event winners (Loni Havlovick, Nicole Davey and Natasha Lafferty) along with a pair of relay victories, won with 134 points.

"We didn't know where we were going to end up today so we're pretty happy with the end results," Columbia Falls head coach Jamie Heinz said.

"For the first track meet it gives us a good indication of where our kids are at and what areas we need to work on. It allows us to find holes in our team and now find kids who can fill those."

Reigning high jump state champion Dillon Fryxell turned in an impressive showing by clearing 6-6, which is two inches shy of his winning mark at last year's state meet.

A few teams were shorthanded or just plain rusty, but the first meet got in the books regardless.

"We need a starting point. Nothing really important happens in April in track, so we're trying to just get our wheels turning and get ourselves ready for the big meets coming up later," Whitefish head coach Derek Schulz said. "But you have to start somewhere and this has been an awesome meet."

Last year's invite was canceled due to poor weather.
