STEVENSVILLE - A beautiful day in Stevensville saw both Ronan girls' and boys' tennis teams lose season opening matches 3-4 and 2-5, respectively.
"Finally after four weeks of practice we got to play," head coach Gordon Cummings said. "A lot of nerves for the first time players."
Sophomore Amber Metzger won her match as the No. 1 singles player, taking down her Stevensville opponent 6-4,6-4.
"Amber played a good, consistent match as her opponent didn't make many mistakes," Cummings said.
Doubles play was solid as well, as the Maidens took two of three matches. Sophomores Seri Smith and Brianna Frank dominated their opponent 6-2, 6-0, while new faces Camilla Huuse and Angela Mousisyan outlasted their counterparts 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
"Seri and Brianna played very well and were consistent and worked together to win No. 2 double," Cummings said. "Camilla and Angela, two of our exchange students, were very nervous but held on to win a long three setter. It was great to see their enthusiasm out on the court."
The boys only won two of their seven matches but got solid production from their No. 4 singles spot and No. 3 doubles pair. Jess Smith rallied back for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 singles win, which impressed his coach.
"Jess had a long three setter but held on to win," Cummings said. "As the season goes on, Jess will get more consistent."
Doubles pair Kyle Yankey and Chase Allen made their match look easy, breezing to a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
"Kyle and Chase played a strong match," Cummings said. "It's their second year and they seem to work really well together."
The Chiefs and Maidens will try to translate chemistry into wins as the teams hit the road again this weekend and will face both Corvallis and Hamilton on Saturday.
