BURBANK — Despite improved play the Royal tennis teams dropped two tough decisions against their hosts on Thursday.

Royal’s boys lost 4-1 while the Lady Knights fell 3-2.

“The matches were, as a whole, exceptionally close with no less than three split-set matches, one of which went to a tie break,” Royal coach Josh Drewry said. “Both our boys and girls put on spectacular shows, but we just came up short.”

In girls play, Royal’s No. 2 singles player, Monica Sanchez, pulled out an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win.

Also winning for the Lady Knights was the No. 1 doubles team of Moriah Christensen and Hollie Clouse, who pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory. 

“For the first time this season, these partners played an aggressive net game rather than their signature defensive baseline style,” Drewry said. “There was some excellent doubles being played that makes me want to see just how far they can take themselves.”

No. 1 singles player Breahna Weisser dropped a three-set decision while the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams of Zenaida Lopez/Maria Trujillo and Lizkey Valenzuela and Diana Santacruz both fell in two set matches.

On the boys side, two doubles defaults undermined the Knights in their loss.

However, their No. 1 singles player Candelario Peraza pulled out a strong 6-4, 6-2 triumph.

At No. 2 singles, Noah Grant dropped a hotly contested 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 decision.

Lady Devils end up tied

WILSON CREEK — The Wilson Creek Lady Devils ended up tied with visiting Liberty Bell on Thursday as the teams split four matches in a 2-2 finish.

Senior No. 1 singles player Stefanie McQuaig pulled out a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win while Wilson Creek’s No. 3, eighth-grader, Chelsea Fisher picked up a resounding 6-0, 6-0 win.

In boys play, the Wilson Creek squad dropped a 3-0 team decision to Liberty Bell as the visitors swept all six sets on the day.
