Triathlon competitor dies of cardiac arrest during event

HAYDEN - A 60-year-old Coeur d'Alene man competing in the third annual Hayden View Triathlon on Saturday suffered apparent cardiac arrest during the swim portion of the event and later died.

Leslie Chariton was pulled from the water near Honeysuckle Beach and CPR was performed, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department said.

Chariton was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff's officials said.

The race consisted of a half-mile swim, a 10.2-mile bike course, and 3.7-mile run. The race started with the swim at 7 a.m.
