A-Rod goes 0-for-8 in series with Rays

James Shields worked into the eighth inning to outpitch CC Sabathia, prolonging Alex Rodriguez's quest for his 600th homer and helping the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 3-0 on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Carl Crawford and Kelly Shoppach drove in runs for the Rays, who took two of three games during a matchup between the teams with the top two records in baseball.

Rodriguez went 0 for 8 in the series and is 9 for 38 (.237) with eight RBIs in 10 games since hitting No. 599.

Angels 4, Rangers 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Jered Weaver outpitched Cliff Lee with seven sharp innings in a matchup of the AL's strikeout and ERA leaders, and Los Angeles beat Texas to win two of three in their weekend series.

Red Sox 4, Tigers 3: Pinch-runner Darnell McDonald scored the winning run when Marco Scutaro's bunt single was thrown away by pitcher Robbie Weinhardt, and host Boston won in its last at-bat over Detroit for the second straight game.

White Sox 4, Athletics 1: Gavin Floyd carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before settling for another outstanding outing, leading host Chicago over Oakland.

Indians 5, Blue Jays 4: Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer, Jason Donald added a solo shot and visiting Cleveland beat Toronto for the sixth time in seven games.

Royals 5, Orioles 4: Alex Gordon homered and Bruce Chen won for the first time since July 3 to lead host Kansas City past Baltimore.

• NATIONAL LEAGUE

Reds 2, Braves 1: Brandon Phillips hit a tying triple with two out in the fifth inning and scored the tiebreaking run on shortstop Alex Gonzalez's error, helping Cincinnati beat visiting Atlanta.

Phillies 6, Nationals 4, 11 inn.: Placido Polanco and Jayson Werth each drove in a run in the 11th inning, helping Philadelphia avoid a sweep at Washington.

Padres 5, Marlins 4: Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a two-run double with two outs in the sixth inning and host San Diego avoided a three-game sweep by Florida.

Cardinals 9, Pirates 1: Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in St. Louis' win over visiting Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks 14, Mets 1: Adam LaRoche hit a pair of three-run homers in visiting Arizona's win over New York.

Rockies 8, Cubs 7: At Denver, Jorge De La Rosa earned his first win in three months and Colorado beat Chicago.

Astros 5, Brewers 2: Pinch-hitter Jason Michaels connected for a grand slam in the seventh inning and host Houston completed the three-game sweep of Milwaukee.

Giants 2, Dodgers 0: Matt Cain pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning, earning his first career win against visiting Los Angeles as San Francisco completed a three-game sweep.
