COEUR d’ALENE — A months-long dispute between two men erupted Sunday afternoon following a chance encounter in traffic on U.S. 95 near Neider Avenue.
One man on a motorcycle was punched in the face. The other, in a car, got a tire shot out with a handgun, police said.
A 45-year-old Athol man was arrested after allegedly punching a man in his 30s and then reportedly trying to run him over with his car near the Red Lobster, at 212 Neider Ave., in Coeur d’Alene, police said.
The driver of the car, Keith W. Williams, was arrested for aggravated assault, Coeur d’Alene police said.
Police said Williams and the man on the motorcycle — police did not release his name — were both northbound on U.S. 95 when they were stopped at a red light at Neider. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. just south of Neider.
Williams called out the name of the other man, got out of his car and approached him, then allegedly punched him. Police said Williams admitted punching the man.
The man on the motorcycle, and witnesses at the scene, said Williams allegedly tried to drive at the man, police said.
The man on the motorcycle had a small-caliber gun and shot at Williams’ tire, which was blown out. Williams drove to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department, where he was later arrested. Police believe only one shot was fired. Police believe they have the bullet still in the tire.
