Dogs not ready for adoption yet

The dogs seized from a Hauser Lake area breeder aren’t up for adoption.
Nor are the 39 poodles and labradoodles in jeopardy of being euthanized, officials said Monday.
“We legally have to hold them to give the owner their due process,” said Nancy Hill, Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service director, on the dogs taken Friday from the licensed breeder, the Iron Horse Ranch, located at 26727 E. Hauser Lake Road on the Washington-Idaho state line. “But at some point that will be sorted out in the court system.”
In the meantime, SCRAPS is holding the dogs. A veterinarian has determined they are in need of additional care from infection and grooming issues.
SCRAPS additionally reported 38 dogs, some described as emaciated, had been taken from the property, but a later count found one had been skipped. Since news reports on the case, SCRAPS has been flooded with phone calls from people seeking to adopt one.
But it’s still too early to do that, Hill said. The reason is because owners have 15 days to petition the court for their return.
Hill said the additional animals has created stress on the facility, but they do have room. They are currently working with other shelters to hold some of their other dogs.
The dogs might be available for adoption in the future, Hill said. If they are, SCRAPS will send out a press release notifying the public.
During Friday’s seizure Wilma L. Turner, 61, owner of Iron Horse Ranch, was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and booked into Spokane County Jail. She was released after she posted an unspecified bond on Saturday, according to staff at the jail.
Turner did not return calls from The Press.
An investigation is under way to determine whether Turner will face charges relating to animal mistreatment. Charges could come this week, Hill said.
