EPA officials 'evaluating' public comment extension

The extension request is being weighed.
The Environmental Protection Agency is considering the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce's request for a 90-day extension on the public comment period for the proposed Upper Basin cleanup plan.
The chamber said the 2,200-page document is too vast for the public to analyze in the allotted 45 days, which are up on Aug. 25.
"We're evaluating," said EPA spokesperson Anne Dailey on Monday. "We will move promptly on it."
The decision over whether to grant a longer comment period for the Upper Coeur d'Alene River Basin Proposed Plan will depend on the reasoning in the chamber's request, Dailey said.
"I think it (a decision) will be made fairly soon," she said.
The EPA will host an open house and public meeting regarding their proposed plan for the Upper Coeur d'Alene River Basin cleanup on Wednesday, Aug. 4. An open house with an informal question and answer session begins at 5 p.m. at the Shoshone Medical Center Health and Education Center in Smelterville. A public meeting with recorded comments will follow at 7 p.m.
Comments may be sent regarding the proposed plan to cdabasin@epa.gov or Coeur d'Alene Basin Team, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1200 Sixth Ave. Suite 900 MS ECL-113, Seattle WA 98101. Comments must be received by Wednesday, Aug. 25.
