COEUR d'ALENE - A chain-reaction accident involving five vehicles on Interstate 90 between Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls sent six people to the hospital on Sunday.

All those injured were treated and released.

According to Idaho State Police, Rebecca J. Messing, 55, Spokane Valley, was eastbound in a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am at 4:58 p.m. when a cat ran from the median onto the highway.

The vehicle in front of Messing braked to avoid the cat, causing Messing to apply her brakes.

The Grand Am was struck from behind by a 1995 Volkswagon Golf driven by Matthew T. Rhoden, 17, Coeur d'Alene.

The Golf was then struck by a 2007 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Clay D. Geittmann, 39, Jackson, Wyo.

Two additional crashes involving Anne L. Haynes, 57, Sagle, driving a 2001 GMC Yukon, and Jonathan L. Guthrie, 38, Deer Lodge, Mont., driving a 1999 Ford Taurus, resulted from the first crash.

Rhoden, his passengers Kevin W. Rhoden, 12, Brandon A. Rhoden, 10, and James J. Chambers, 17, and Haynes and her passenger Sarah E. Haynes, 32, were all treated and released at Kootenai Medical Center.

Messing, Guthrie, Geittmann and two passengers in the Silverado were not injured.

All drivers involved were wearing seatbelts.

Eastbound I-90 was reduced to one lane of travel for two hours. Westbound traffic was also delayed due to drivers looking at the accident.
