This was the Boat Drive-In Coney Sauce Recipe that my mother was given years ago. I hope that you enjoy this as it’s a family favorite.

Brown: 3 pounds of hamburger

3 chopped onions

salt and pepper to taste

Add: 2 large cans of tomato juice plus 1 juice can full of water

2 tablespoons of paprika

1 teaspoon of chili powder

2 teaspoons of curry powder

2-1/2 teaspoons cumin

3 to 4 dried red chilis, crushed

Bring to simmer and cook for about 5 hours. Don’t add water unless needed.

Following is my mother’s Coney Island Recipe from the old Boat restaurant. My parents owned a motel on East Sherman in the 1960s and would send me to the Boat to pick up Coneys for dinner once in awhile. I remember the owner’s name was Red. I’m sure you will receive several recipes and I’m wondering how they will compare to mine…?

2 pounds hamburger

1 large onion

salt and pepper to taste

3 tbl chili powder

3 tsp curry powder

1 large can tomato juice

7 chili peppers (wrap in cheesecloth)

Cook hamburger, onion, salt and pepper until hamburger is browned. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer 5 hours. Enjoy!
