Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 5 months AGO
Richard Harwood, resident of Coeur d’Alene since 1978, passed away
peacefully on July 31, 2010, in the presence of family. He was born in
1922 in Portsmouth, Ohio, and served during World War II as an
aviation cadet and ensign in the U.S. Navy. He studied engineering at
the University of Cincinnati and in 1951 moved with his wife to San
Diego, Calif., where he rose through the ranks at Convair/General
Dynamics to become a senior project engineer, working on programs
that included NASA’s Apollo tracking stations and those related to
national security. He retired in 1972.
His first marriage, to Alice Arganbright Harwood, ended in divorce. In
1986 he married Lillian (Frantz) Oakes, who survives him. He is also
survived by his children, Stephanie Harwood and Benjamin Harwood,
both of Connecticut, Brian Harwood, of San Diego, Calif., and Ben and his
wife Maureen’s son Alexander, all of whom remember him with love and
respect.
He greatly valued the friends he made in Coeur d’Alene, and cherished
his relationships with Lillian’s children and their families, who live
in the Spokane Valley and Tacoma.
At his request, no services will be held. He will rest with his wife’s
family in Pines Cemetery in Spokane Valley, with burial arranged
through English Funeral Chapel.
His family extends their deep gratitude to the caring staff at Legends
Park Assisted Living and Applegate Hospice, who were a support not
only to him but to them.
