Columbia Falls pulled out a state championship in class A swimming last weekend, edging the Chinook Lions by just 4.5 points to take the crown.
The Wildcats were led by state champions Karyssa Nelson in the 11-12 age group and Colton Babcock in the 9-10 age bracket. Both swimmers have led the team all season long.
Nelson won the 200 meter individual medley, the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter freestyle. She was the high point leader in the 11-12 age group.
Babcock won the 100 meter individual medley and 50 meter breaststroke.
Tyler Langton also helped the team to victory, taking third overall in the boys 8 and under group and first in the 25 meter backstroke.
Coach Mike Nelson said the team had a great day Sunday to get the victory.
"I had us ranked third going into the meet, after Saturday's preliminary swims," Nelson said. "They jumped up to second, by only one point. But on Sunday the kids dug deep and pulled out the win. We had outstanding performances from our 8 and under boys — Tyler Langton, Russell Albin, Cooper Babcock, Danny Henjum and James Role."
Nelson also noted that rookie swimmers Zayne Friar and Logan Stephens as well as state champ Babcock really made a difference. Friar and Stephens swim in the 9-10 age group.
Nelson said he also got solid performances out of rookie Henry Chisholm, Garett Role, Dalton Nelson and Jon Riffey.
