COEUR d'ALENE - It's a chance to take a look behind the scenes, and bring home a new friend.
The Kootenai Humane Society is opening its facility - and dropping adoption rates - to public tours on Saturday as it celebrates its new executive director and a freshly touched-up building.
"It's to show people the challenges we're facing," said Rondi Renaldo, executive director. "But also that the animals are treated wonderfully."
The daylong event, The Big Fix, will have a pet blessing for both the pets and the adoption center, as well as a leash-cutting ceremony unveiling the redone place.
More than that, it's a chance for people to see the ins-and-outs it takes to care for and adopt out pets.
"We want to show people what truly the shelter does, said Renaldo, who was hired as the new leader in April. "It's hard to judge if you don't see behind the scenes."
The shelter, which has a no-kill policy, has around 110 animals, around half of which are dogs. All of its pets will be half off this week leading up to the event. On Saturday, dogs will be $14, down from their usual $85 or so, and cats will cost $8.
The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. but from 1 to 4 p.m. tours every 20 minutes will lead groups to all corners of the building, even the vet room not normally open to the public. All of the 15 staff members, including the veterinarian, will be on hand to meet and offer folks a glimpse of the everyday routines. A free lunch will also be served beginning at 1 p.m.
"I want to show them as the new executive director what we've done with the place," Renaldo said.
"And I'd love to have a record-breaking adoption day."
Those who show up for the free event will receive a $10 off voucher that can be used at either one of the humane society's two thrift stores.
If you're planning on taking home an animal and you already own a pet, bring your current one with you so the future roommates can meet.
Kootenai Humane Society is located at 11650 N. Ramsey Road.
