Sting soccer teams win at Northwest Cup

Coeur d’Alene Sting under-11 girls (Engebretsen): The Sting prevailed in a field of 20 teams to win the Les Schwab Northwest Cup last weekend at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.
The Sting beat the ASE Bandits 8-0, the Spokane Shadow Select United FC 5-2, and secured the top spot in their bracket by beating the SSC Elite (Hohenthal) 3-2.
In the quarterfinals, the Sting downed the Spokane Shadow G99 U11 Sky (Jones) 3-1. In the semifinal, the Sting shutout the Idaho Thunder (Whitten) 2-0.
In the championship game, the Sting and the Moses Lake Wombats played to a scoreless tie after regulation and two overtime periods. The teams were tied at 4 following a five-player shootout, with Kimber Burgin, Anna Hilbert, Lily Scott and Bridget Rieken scoring for the Sting. In sudden death, Capriel Halliday fended of the opponent’s sixth shot, and Annica Wilson secured the win for the Sting with her goal.
Sting U13 girls gold: The Sting went undefeated to win the Northwest Cup last weekend at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.
The Sting opened by beating the Sabers (Stiles/Hansen) 5-2. Halle Eborall scored two goals, and Isabella Scott, Nicole Mitten and Zoie Cloutier scored once each. Sydney Quimby had an assist.
The Sting defeated SSC Elite G97 (Bellefeuille) 3-2. Cydney Roop scored two goals, Halle Eborall one. The Sting then defeated FC Missoula Blue 6-0. Cameron Croghan scored a hat trick, Sydney Quimby added two goals and Julia McCaw had a goal and an assist. Julia Roach posted the shutout in goal.
In the semifinals, the Sting defeated the Idaho Thunder FC 6-0. Cameron Croghan scored two goals and Isabella Scott, Sydney Quimby, Mikinzie Hague and Halle Eborall each added one. Caitlin Barber, Cydney Roop, Magen Daniels and Mikinzie Hague each had assists, and Roach notched the shutout in goal.
In the championship game, the Sting and SSC Elite G97 (Bellefeuille) were scoreless through two overtimes, and the Sting prevailed 2-1 in the shootout on goals by Cydney Roop and Sydney Quimby. Roach recorded her third shutout of the tournament and capped off the championship by stopping all but one of the shootout attempts. Julia McCaw, Kelsi Grinde and Josee Bassett earned kudos for outstanding defense.
Sting U14 boys gold: The Sting placed third at the Northwest Cup at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane Aug. 13-15.
The Sting beat the Idaho Thunder 4-2 in their first game. Jack Barrett scored twice, Alec Maldanado and Gunnar Skindlov each scored once, and Pierra Schrambach had one assist.
In the second game, the Sting beat the Spokane Sabers 8-0. Dylan Flolo, Jack Barrett and Pierre Schrambach each scored twice, and Alec Maldanado and Gunnar Skindlov had one goal each. Dylan Flolo, Gunnar Skindlov and Kade Murphree each had an assist.
The Sting beat the Shadow United (Spokane) 3-0. Devin Kohles scored on an assist from Brennan Barber. Kade Murphree scored on a penalty kick, and Pierre Schrambach scored once.
In the semifinals, the Sting lost 3-1 to CB United (Moses Lake). The Sting led 1-0 at halftime with a goal by Jack Barrett on an assist from Alec Maldanado. CB United went on to win the tournament, defeating NW Nationals (Seattle) in the title game.
SWIMMING
Kananowicz leads CAST: Bryce Kananowicz, 14, of the Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team was the overall champion at the 16th annual Long Bridge Swim held on Lake Pend Oreille on Aug. 7. Kananowicz won the 1.77-mile race in 33 minutes, 57 seconds — just 20 seconds off the course record — beating the second-place swimmer by more than a minute.
Peyton Bowen, 14, of CAST won the women’s division in 40.30, closing a 50-yard gap with a quarter mile to go and sprinting to victory.
Nicole Rozier, 12, of CAST, won the 12-and-under women’s division in 43.29. Sidney Orr, 14, was third overall in the women’s division in 42.46.
Hanna Monroe, 12, finished in 1.14.26.
On the boys side, Ethan Cordes (49.03), Ryan Swayze (43.33), Spencer Shuman (44.29), Dirk Seymour (42.46) of CAST all placed in the top 50. Gus Koch, 15, finished in the top 10 of all swimmers in 38.29.
Other CAST swimmers included Megan Forrester (58.22), Jeffery Forrester (1.06.06) and Cooper Ray (1.08.15).
