Polson girls take fourth place at difficult Old Works golf course

ANACONDA — Lake County golfers got their first taste of varsity action and it came against a very tough course at the Anaconda Invitational Monday at the Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda.

“The course beat them up,” Ronan golf coach Rupe Paulson said.

The Polson girls’ team overcame Old Works to place fourth with a combined score of 421, while the Ronan boys’ team placed tenth with a 435 score.

“For most of them it was their first action on varsity,” Paulson said.

For Polson, senior Amy Williamson scored a 99 for tenth place, followed by sophomore Anna DiGiallonardo with a 100, freshman Jaylin Kenney with a 108, junior Kat Medland with a 114 and freshman Saquoia Bagrow with a 123.

“It was a good start for us,” Polson head coach Bill Owen said. “These girls are all business. I’m really looking forward to what they can do.”

The highest finisher over the weekend was Ronan junior Riley Dennis shot an 80 to place sixth.

“That course is really nasty if you’re not on the fairway,” Owen said. “You’ll lose a few.”

Polson sophomore Hayden Congden placed eighth with an 82 even though his team didn’t field enough players for team scoring. Ronan senior Alex Dulmes, who won the state championship  last year, placed 11th with a score of 101.

“She’s a pretty steady player,” Paulson said.

Both teams will play at the Ronan Invitational  at 9 a.m. this Friday in Ronan. Both coaches are looking forward to an easier course.

“This week their course doesn’t play as hard as Old Works,” Owen said. “I know [Polson] will be looking forward to playing in the valley.”
