It took a lot of studying.

Last spring, 86 Flathead High School students completed 257 International Baccalaureate exams. The hours spent poring over notes paid off; their average score of 5.22 out of a possible 7 points bested the international average of 4.55.

Particularly impressive were students who took history exams, International Baccalaureate coordinator Kelli Higgins said: There were 15 perfect scores among the 47 Flathead students who tested in history.

The 2009-10 program was Flathead’s largest on record, with 24 students earning a full International Baccalaureate diploma — twice as many as in 2009.

Earning a full diploma requires taking at least six rigorous courses, many of which are two-year classes, during the final two years of high school. Diploma candidates must also complete 55 hours each in community service, creative activities and physical action; complete an extended research project; and take a Theory of Knowledge course.

Assessments include oral presentations and written commentary that focus on problem solving and critical thinking. International evaluators score the exams, and Flathead students are measured against rigorous criteria along with students from 139 countries.

“Through the IB program, our students have the opportunity to receive a world-class education right here in the Flathead Valley,” Higgins said. “Enrollment in IB classes continues to grow as more of our students become aware of the doors that open for them as a result of their participation in IB.”

Flathead is the only Montana high school that offers an IB diploma program. It is now in its sixth year as an authorized International Baccalaureate school.
