RONAN - Junior Robbie Gauthier threw two touchdown passes to start the annual Ronan Orange and Black football scrimmage last Friday. The first team offense moved effectively along the Ronan rug, scoring in nine of the fourteen possessions of the game.
"We did some good things," Ronan head coach Jim Benn said. "Everybody played well."
Even though Benn did work on the throwing game in the scrimmage, don't expect Ronan to become an arena football team anytime soon.
"This year we're going to split a kid out and to a lot of people, that's wide open," Benn said. "We're a running team and that's what we do."
Six of the touchdowns scored in the scrimmage were running plays. Each possession on offense seemed to focus on a certain type of offensive attack.
"That's the weird thing about the scrimmage," Benn said. "We try to get kids the ball, we wouldn't necessarily call it like a real game."
Freshman T.J. Webb had two sacks on the quarterback against the first team offense, and interceptions by junior Jack Humphreys, senior Lucas Black, sophomore Evan Quequesah and sophomore Quentin Denton were highlights for the defense.
Another bright spot was junior Marcus Hungerford, who not only caught the first touchdown pass of the scrimmage from Gauthier, but showcased his excellent quarterback skills as well.
"He gives us something that we haven't had since I've been here," Benn said.
The team also plans to split Hungerford out and his skills should come in very handy during the season.
Along with his interception, Humphreys also had a 20-yard touchdown run where he juked and cut his way to the endzone.
Sophomore Will Weatherwax had a 20-yard touchdown run, then a 15-yard touchdown reception that had plenty of YAC yards as he twisted and turned his way to score.
He then scored on the third consecutive possession with a one-yard touchdown run.
The team looked sharp for just one week of practice, as there was only one offsides or false start in the entire scrimmage and just two fumbles.
"There are a lot of little things," Benn said about what his team could work on.
Ronan will open their season against Browning at 7 p.m. tomorrow night in Browning.
