An 18-year-old Bonners Ferry man was charged with misdemeanor petit theft and battery after allegedly stealing prescription Oxycontin from a couple who were camping at Solomon Lake on Aug. 12.

According to sheriff's chief deputy Rich Stephens, Alan Funkhouser apparently woke Joanna and Donald McCallister Sr. at about 5 a.m. that morning, asking for money for gas.

Joanna McCallister began setting out her husband's medications as her husband went to get some cash, when Funkhouser allegedly grabbed a vial containing Oxycontin and attempted to run.

When Joanna McCallister tried to stop him, a brief scuffle ensued before Funkhouser broke free and made good his escape.

At 6:44 a.m. the family called for help, and deputies later found Funkhouser and took him into custody without incident, though the drugs he allegedly took, were not in his possession. The event seen by three witnesses.

Funkhouser remains in custody at the Boundary County Jail.
