SWIMMING
Crocs third at Turkey Trot: Eighty swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team Crocs combined their efforts to achieve a third-place team finish at the Turkey Trot Invitational Nov. 19-21 in Cheney, Wash.
Leading the pack were strong individual performances by team captain Kjirsten Magnuson, 17, and two-time high school state champion Joe Loftus, 15. Loftus swam to personal best in the 100-yard backstroke, beating the 2010 Speedo Junior National Championship Meet automatic qualifying time. The Junior National meet, to be held Dec. 9-11 in Atlanta, draws from the nation's most elite pool of 18-and-under swimmers. Joe also swam to a bonus standard time in the 200 backstroke.
Magnuson, who had previously qualified for the Junior National meet in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, met two of the bonus time standards in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle.
Joining Magnuson and Loftus at the Junior National meet will be Bryce Kananowicz, 14, the fastest 14-year old boy in the nation in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. At the Turkey Trot, Kananowicz garnered the boys age 13-14 high point award, given to the swimmer with the most individual points over the three-day competition. The other CAST swimmer to earn a high point award was Caleb Markowski, 8, for the 8-and-under boys division.
Other individual highlights include 15 athletes who achieved 100 percent best times. They are Charles England (6), Lizzy Wensley (8), Hailey Pierce (8), Josh Hudlet (8), Ali Forster (9), Kathryn Moon (9), Carrie McNee (10), Madison Morlan (11), Walker Bowen (11), Maggie de Tar (12), Margi Holloway (13), Ryan Costin (13), Kade Hern (13), Spencer Shuman (13), Jessica Penney (14).
The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team will be hosting its next competition, the Jingle Bell Splash, Dec. 10-12 at the Ray and Joan Kroc Center.
