SPOKANE - Steven Kuhn and Matt Marantz scored 36 seconds apart in the first period and the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Portland Winterhawks 4-3 in Western Hockey League action in front of 7,638 at the Spokane Arena on Saturday night.

The Chiefs ended a 10-game losing streak at home to Portland.

Sven Bartschi scored for Portland with 59 seconds remaining in the opening period, but Kuhn's second goal of the game at 8:38 of the second period gave Spokane a 3-1 lead.

Nino Niederreiter cut into Spokane's lead with a goal at the 12:58 mark of the second period, but Brady Brassart's second goal of the season at 16:54 proved to be the eventual game-winner for the Chiefs.

James Reid made 26 saves for Spokane (14-9-2-2, 32 points), Mac Carruth 45 for Portland (22-7-0-2, 46), which remains atop the Western Conference's U.S. Division.

The Chiefs and Winterhawks square off again Wednesday at the Spokane Arena.
