Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks last

week issued a reminder to hunters that it is illegal to waste

edible wild game meat.

Hunters are asked to be responsible for

seeing that the wild game they harvested is properly cared for and

processed.

Under Montana law, it is illegal to

waste any part of a game animal that is defined as “suitable for

food.” For big-game animals, all four quarters above the hock,

including loin and backstrap, fall into that category.

Hunters who can’t use the wild game

meat could donate it to a neighbor or friend who would appreciate

it, or to a local food bank. There are many food distribution

programs in Montana eager to accept big-game meat.

Anyone with information about the

wanton waste of wild game should call FWP’s tip hotline,

1-800-TIP-MONT. Callers who report violations of wildlife, fish or

park regulations can remain anonymous and may be eligible for cash

rewards.
