LIBBY - Ronan wrestled well over the weekend, defeating Whitefish 51-18, but forfeited weight classes hurt the Chiefs in dual losses to Columbia Falls and Libby.
On Friday for the Columbia Falls Triangle, the Chiefs had seven wrestlers win their matches against Whitefish en route to their dual victory. Against Whitefish, the Chiefs had six wrestlers win their matches but four weight class forfeits tipped the favor towards Columbia Falls, 45-31.
"All I want them to do is go out and go hard from whistle to whistle," Ronan head coach Dustyn Azure said.
On Saturday against Libby, the Chiefs forfeited four weight classes again and despite five wins from wrestlers, Ronan fell 48-15.
"That's what we struggled with last year," Azure said. "We're going to have to try to fill those weight classes."
Defending state champion Toby Cheff had an excellent weekend in the 189-pound weight class, pinning Robby Neff of Whitefish in 1:02, pinning Josh Folsom of Columbia Falls in 1:47 and defeating Kody Berget of Libby 9-5.
"He was pushing the pace," Azure said of Cheff's wrestling. Azure said that Cheff was dominating and controlling, and just a few mistakes against Berget had him winning by decision.
Senior Cole McArthur had an undefeated weekend as well with two pins at the triangle and a decision in the Libby dual.
"Cole has been putting in his time, he's hit tournaments because the season started," Azure said.
McArthur already has seven matches under his belt thanks to that commitment.
"He's been in the weight room quite a bit," Azure said.
Two-hundred fifteen pounder Colby Roberts also had two pins and a decision over the weekend without a loss.
Ronan wrestlers who had two match wins were Andrew Tiegan at 119 pounds and Quentin Denton at 160 pounds. All their wins were with pins.
