Red Devil Wrestlers participated in the Superior Invitational last weekend racking up 65 team points and four medal winners in a competitive field of 14 teams.

Junior heavyweight Taylor Scott finished fourth, 215 pound senior Derek Jenson placed third, senior heavyweight Cody Martens came in second, and Senior Adam Moore won his 189 pound weight class.

Head coach Kelly Moore was pleased with the performance of his heavier upper classmen at both the mixer on Friday and following tournament on Saturday.

“It’s about what we expected for those kids to place where they’re at,” Moore said. “The majority of my team is over 170, but that makes a good wrestling room too, wrestling big kids.”

In the mixer on Friday, every Noxon wreslter had at least one match, and most wrestled twice in the informal affair.

“We did two rounds,” Moore said. “We don’t keep team scores when you do mixers, it’s just about getting mat time.”

On Friday, 140 pound junior Nick Kuckuck won his first match of he season over Wyat Miller from Eureka.

Noxon will take the mat again at the Buzz Lucey Tournament in Eureka on Friday.

Moore will continue to drill his team on technique, working on motion and good body position this week at practice in hopes of bringing home some more medals, although his ultimate goal is to see his wrestlers make it to state.

“Hopefully our younger kids will make it through the tournament a little bit further,” Moore said. “We’ll keep moving them along.”

Moore is even hoping to add another wrestler to bolster his lighter ranks, in 145 pound Austin Jiminez. Jiminez, a transfer student, is waiting on a pending ruling from the MHSA to determine his eligibility after a transfer.
