ARLEE - Last Thursday in Arlee's dual with Hellgate's JV team, Clayton Trimble found himself in a unfavorable spot: his back was on the mat.
However, the 171-pound wrestler knew how to get out of that situation.
"Just bridge like crazy, go nuts and never accept
defeat," Trimble said. "Find a weak spot with body pressure."
In his second match of the night, Trimble found that weak spot against his would-be pinner Jace Knapp and exploited it.
"He was up too high," Trimble said.
Using his speed, Trimble quickly reversed the situation, quickly turned the tables on Knapp and scored a pin 2:15 into the match.
While his skill and smarts got him out that situation, Trimble said he doesn't exactly relish reversing his opponents pin attempts.
"I don't like to be in that position to use it," Trimble said.
Trimble wasn't the only one pinning for Arlee last Thursday.
The team record 18 pins in 21 matches against Hellgate's JV team.
"John Smith, the coach of Missoula Hellgate is a great guy and he has some solid but very young wrestlers," Arlee head coach Ken Hill said. "We had a good night and a lot of fun wrestling. It was also a good experience for our young and developing wrestlers. We did get a lot of pins that night, we worked on some things during the dual to gain confidence, but you can't judge a season by a single dual."
Cameron Dominick also found himself in trouble in his first match, but was able to stick with the match and ended up pinning Hellgate's Tyrone Baird in 3:31. Like Trimble, he was on the ropes.
"He overpowered me pretty well," Dominick said. "Personally I think I got lucky."
Dominick used a head and arm move to reverse Baird, who must have thought he had Dominick beat, and came out victorious.
"It doesn't really work that much but it works if they're not expecting it," Dominick said of his move.
The performance against Hellgate came just two days after Arlee split with Deer Lodge and Florence in a home triangle meet on Tuesday. The Warriors defeated Deer Lodge 42-30 but forfeited five matches in a 56-12 loss to Florence.
"We did a lot of wrestling on Tuesday night and managed to beat Deer Lodge in a dual, but then lost soundly to the extremely tough Florence," Hill said. "Florence is a good team with some tough kids in over half of their weight classes. They won the division last year and look to repeat if they stay healthy."
Against Florence, senior Curt Seidel pinned Damon Ward in an epic battle. Seidel finally made the pin with 5:36 into the match.
On Saturday, Arlee took fourth at the Superior Invitational behind a second place finish by Dominick in the 130-pound class, two third place finishers and three fourth place finishers.
Dominick pinned Corie Mann of Glacier 1:23 into the the quarter final match, then defeated Kaleb Lafrancois of Eureka by decision, scoring a 12-7 decision to the reach the championship match.
Zach Tameler went 5-1 during the tournament and pinned Jose Letcher from Eureka for third place in the 140-pound class. Carter Clinkenbeard fell in his first match then won the next three to get to the consolation final. In that match, Clinkenbeard won by a 5-3 decision over Zach Lyons from Thompson Falls to take third in the 145-pound class.
Leif Rova went 3-2 and placed fourth in the 152-pound category.
"Leif is developing into a very scrappy wrestler," Hill said. "He is trying new things and having some success, but he does need a new pair of shoes."
Al Plant finished fourth at 160 pounds with three wins during the tournament.
"Al is persistent," Hill said. "He has set his goals for the season and is working hard to attain them."
Trimble finished fourth in the 171-pound class as well.
"I thought we did very well with the team we put on the mat," Hill said. "We were missing Cole Rice [taking
ACT's], Logan Lefler was out sick, and Austin Rubel was taking a match off. The other athletes had a great time and did some fantastic wrestling. It is still early in the season and we are still in the developmental stage of wrestling."
