COEUR D ‘ALENE - With 54 teams from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana, the TriState Tournament in Couer d'Alene last weekend was a perfect testing ground for Polson wrestlers.
"It's easily the best tournament in the Northwest," Polson head coach Bob Owen said. "It's a good chance for the kids to show their stuff."
Polson took eight kids to the tournament, with senior Jacob Young advancing to the second day of the tournament.
"They scrapped hard," Owen said. "There were not any easy matches. It's just tough as nails."
Owen did like that his wrestlers got to experience the competition there.
"Every tournament is a learning experience," Owen said. "I think it was good for them."
When players were out of the Tri-State tournament, they went to Lake City High School in Couer d'Alene for a take-down tournament. It was there where five wrestlers won their weight class. Freshman Carlo Quinones (105 pounds) and junior Josiah Clairmont (285), along with sophomores Craig Feistner (119), Drew Fouty (125) and Mike Devlin (145) were all successful on the weekend.
"It took a little sour taste out of their mouths," Owen said.
In a take-down tournament, wrestlers are required to record a certain number of takedowns to win the match, so the rules are different from a traditional matchup.
Eureka Invitational
Polson grappler Dylan Moll has garnered attention as a freshman, ranked fifth in the most recent coaches poll for the 112 weight class in Class A.
"It's going good as a freshman, I feel like I'm doing pretty good," Moll said. "I feel like I've gained quite a bit so far this year."
Moll had two wins in Polson's two duals against Columbia Falls and Whitefish earlier last week, and then placed first in the 105 weight class at the Buzz Lucey Memorial Tournament in Eureka on Saturday.
In a show of just how deep the Pirates' wrestling program is, Moll had to pin his own teammate, Lucas Polk in 38 seconds. Polk took second and Taylor Martin took third by defeating Isaac King from Libby in a 9-4 decision.
While Moll said he felt pretty bad pinning his teammate and friend, he wasn't the only one doing good work at the Invitational.
In all, six Polson wrestlers placed at the event.
"I was really excited about that," Owen said.
Sophomore Colton Lenz took first in the 145-pound category, beating Tucker Truett from Frenchtown with an 8-1 decision.
Junior Alex Nystrom placed second in the 135-pound class.
"He's a hard worker, I've been impressed with what he's been doing," Owen said.
Sophomore Nick Grogan took third in the 140-pound class, pinning Andre Condjt from Libby in 1:03 of the first round.
Sophomore Marlin Burke took fourth at 189 pounds.

Mike Devlin pinned Bryan Schaeffer in 2:39 in the 145-pound class battle. Colton Lenz pinned Colby Arbuckle in 2:47.
Polson's wins by decision were Dylan Moll over Seth McCall, 9-3 (112 pounds), Jacob Young over Kohl Thompson, 7-4 (140) and Josiah Clairmont over Cody Bartos, 7-4 (285).
Columbia Falls had two wins by decision and two pins. However, they were able to gain points through four forfeits in weight classes and won 43-33 over the Pirates.
"There were a couple matches where we were right in the match and we got pinned," Owen said.
Against Whitefish, Polson record ten pins and won in dominating fashion, 78-9, over the Bulldogs.
