POST FALLS - Post Falls police are seeking memorabilia related to the department and also volunteers 16 and up with its recent program expansion.

The department has started a history project in which photos, stories and other memorabilia will be displayed at the station.

"We have a lot of rich history in Post Falls, but not a whole lot of past information about the police department," Chief Scot Haug said.

The artifacts should be related to the police department. They can either be loaned or donated. Copies of photos can be made so that the owners can keep the originals if they desire.

The artifacts can include newspaper articles, photos, PFPD attire and testimonials from the public about significant events involving the police.

Photos, stories or questions can also be e-mailed to shaug@postfallspolice.com. Volunteers Carol Nettles and John Bujosa are coordinating the project.

The police department is also expanding its volunteer program to include those 16 and older. Those age 16 to 18 need parental permission.

The program has generally included those who are 50 and older, but Haug said there are also duties that can be filled by younger volunteers.

"In the past, we've called on seniors to volunteer, but we've had some high school students lately help and they've done a stellar job," Haug said. "We're loosening up on the age requirement."

Duties include answering the phone, filing, volunteer patrol, checking on senior citizens, property watches, assisting with the speed trailer and assisting with public events.

The program has given 45,000 volunteer hours to the department since it was formed in 2002, saving taxpayers an estimated $750,000, Haug said. It currently has about 20 volunteers.

"With the economy and tight budget, we see volunteers as a way to continue to improve service, but not cost the taxpayers any more money," Haug said.

Those interested must fill out an application.

For more information on the volunteer program, visit www.postfallspolice.com or call Ashleigh Schild or Curtis Exley at 773-3517.
