ARLEE — Turnovers were a main factor in the Arlee girls’ basketball team’s losses last week against the top teams in District 14-C.
In a 46-27 loss to No. 1 Hot Springs, the Scarlets only scored three in the first quarter on the way to a 14-point deficit at the half.
Freshman Mahalia Hendren and junior Melissa Ivanoff each scored eight for Arlee before the Scarlets took on Charlo last Friday.
“To be successful, we have to execute our offense,” head coach Richard Bachmeier said.
The next night, Arlee battled No. 2 Charlo at home.
To open the game, Arlee freshman Kristyn Adams grabbed a rebound for Arlee’s only lead in the game.
Charlo senior Stephanie Maughan tied things up with a coast-to-coast carry and added two at the line for a 4-2 lead.
Adams tied the game at four before Charlo went on a 13-point run to end the first quarter up 17-4.
“We didn’t play with intensity,” Bachmeier said.
In the second quarter, Charlo sophomore Deondra Brown put in two before dropping one in at the line for a 24-8 lead. At the buzzer, Charlo senior Jaris Kelley passed to freshman Rachel Hoyt for two points and a 29-10 lead.
To start the second half, Hendren dropped two in at the foul line for Arlee, before sophomore Kinley Pope did the same for Charlo.
Kelley passed to Maughan for two before senior Courtney Couture passed to Kelley for two more on the next Charlo possession.
Bachmeier gave his posts a rest after he put freshman Tiffany O’Neil on the floor.
“She played solid defense and grabbed a couple rebounds,” he said. O’Neil ended with two points and senior Chelsea Allaire led with nine for the Scarlets, who travel to Alberton tonight and host Noxon for their senior night on Friday.
Charlo added eight in the fourth for the 52-23 win.
Maughan led with 16 points and Brown added 10.
The next night, the Vikings beat Thompson Falls 54-41.
Pope had a huge game with 30 points as Maughan added 12.
Charlo started out down by eight after the first quarter and worked to within one at the half.
With a 21-point third quarter, the Vikings claimed a 13-point lead and never looked back for a 54-41 win.
The Vikings host Phillipsburg tonight and St. Regis tomorrow night in the final weekend of regular season games.
