There’s much ado about social networking these days but my friend, Bob Driscoll has cornered the market in a more traditional way ... via an extensive network of e-mail contacts. Bob’s e-mail list is legendary and spans local governmental agencies, churches, nonprofits and service organizations. At the press of the “send” button, he’s passed along requests for volunteers, household items for people in need and everything in between. By profession he’s the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s Navigation Director but his real gift is connecting people in our communities. His reward is in successfully filling a need but it’s great to see unsung heroes like Bob recognized. Congratulations on receiving the Disability Rights Advocate Award, Bob!
•••I never cease to be awed by the extraordinary young people who participate each year in the American Legion’s High School Oratorical contest. Congratulations to District 1 winner Sam Paul and second place silver medalist Hannah Joy Coad. Sam moves on to the Area competition on Monday night and the public is invited to attend at 6:30 p.m. at the Post Falls American Legion hall.
•••The annual Post Falls Community Volunteers Sweetheart Ball on Saturday is the perfect Valentine’s treat with Tuxedo Junction providing big band music. 773-6872 or 777-0596 for info. From Feb. 11 - 14, Hidden, a Victorian masquerade mystery dinner theater, will take place at Garden Plaza with proceeds benefiting Wildfire Girls Softball. (208) 819-5608.
•••This year a city council meeting will prevent me from attending the annual Best in Show party at Cricket’s on Tuesday but hopefully all of you will make it. It’s a howling good time, with the Westminster Dog Show live on the big screens, lots of raffle prizes and cleverly-themed menu items for dog lovers. The event benefits the Kootenai Humane Society.
•••A milestone half-century birthday is being celebrated by Kiki Miller today and tomorrow Jody DeLuca Hissong, Trevor Smith, Carole Tabakmen and Jeff Carlson will blow out the candles. Friday’s birthdate is shared by Bonnie Guindon, Ann Koustrup and Chris Curlee. On Saturday Elmer Currie will mark 90 years, Fran Harms turns 85 and Toby Flood and Sam Crawford celebrate their birthdays, too. Valentine’s Day birthdays belong to Don James, who’s 80 sweet years young, Joe Doellefeld, Susan DuBois and Tripp Rogers. On Monday wish Jeff Conroy, Mindy Hatcher, Tracy Dickinson and Craig Smith happy birthdays. Next Tuesday is filled with party people when Stephanie Smith, Deanna Goodlander, Morgan Dickinson, Quinn Kennedy, Paula Rehrmann and Bruce English mark their special day.
•••THERE’S MORE: New stories and photos almost every day at More Main Street. There’s a link on the right hand rail for adding your birthday to the Main Street Birthday Club for 2010!

MAIN STREET: Mentors can change a child's world
I love backstories and when I heard this one last week, knew it was worth sharing.
Tales too good not to share

Alan Wolfe, 57, a first-time Ironman competitor from Post Falls, made it to the finish line on Sherman Avenue about 9:45 p.m., pausing, going down into a prone position and rolling across the line. What most people in the viewing area wouldn't have known about Alan's unique finish is that it honored the only person with ALS to ever complete an Ironman competition, Jon Blais. Blais was diagnosed in 2005 and competed that year in the Hawaii Ironman, finishing with a flourish ... log rolling over the line after 16 hours. He passed away from the degenerative muscle disease in 2007. Alan also honored his late mother, Betty, who died of ALS in 1986 at the age of 58.
Competitive couple continues to run

Dani Zibell and Alan Wolfe married just over four years ago and are such a great match-up. Dani was a devotee of running and in the course of their marriage the couple have competed in four Bloomsdays, a number of 5Ks for charity, two duathlons, four half-marathons and over the weekend their very first marathon.
