Widened camp sites and newer tables and toilets are among improvements planned for the McGillivray Campground situated along the west side of the Koocanusa Reservoir in Kootenai National Forest’s Libby Ranger District.

“We realized for a long time that the facility is aging and in need of better sites to meet future needs,” said Malcolm Edwards, Libby district ranger. “I believe people will be pleased with the upgrades we are working on.”

Besides the wider camp sites and new tables and toilets, Edwards said there will be improved access and use for those with mobility issues, as well as boating, tent site and road upgrades.

Edwards said the improvements are severely needed at the site, which was originally constructed in the early 1970s.

The Forest Service said they have the goal of retaining the natural character of the area while improving visitor safety.

Construction is expected to begin after Labor Day and continue into next year. Edwards said that while construction should not displace summer visitors, there might be some inconveniences when using the complex.
