CHARLO — The Charlo and Arlee girls’ basketball teams met in a district 14-C match-up last Thursday, with the Lady Vikings taking the win 46-14.
The Vikings went on a five-point run to start the game but only led 5-2 after the first quarter.
“It was a little scary that first quarter,” Charlo head coach Bret Thompson said.
With a 9-4 Viking lead, Arlee sophomore Anna Greenwood passed to junior Melissa Ivanoff, who put two points on the board.
On the next play, Charlo sophomore Kinley Pope was able to grab a rebound for two points.
The Vikings ended the half up 22-8.
Charlo senior Stephanie Maughan started the second half with quick passing before scoring two points.
On the next play, Charlo senior Jaris Kelley stole the ball and went in for an easy lay-up.
Maughan passed the ball to an open Pope who hit the basket. Sophomore Deondra Brown hit a three-point shot on the next play for a 33-8 score.
The Vikings shut down Arlee’s offense, allowing four points in the fourth quarter.
“We did a good job of limiting their shots,” Thompson said. “We had some good play from our younger girls.”
Arlee head coach Richard Bachmeier said his team played pretty good defense against Charlo’s shooters.
“They were able to score some and we weren’t,” he said.
Pope led the Vikings with 15 points and Maughan and Brown each added eight. For Arlee, Ivanoff, freshman Mahalia Hendren and freshman Kristyn Adams each had four points for the Scarlets.
With a young team, going up against a seasoned team like Charlo was a challenge for Arlee.
“We made some young mistakes, like turnovers,” Bachmeier said.
Charlo went on to beat Thompson Falls, a Class B team, last Friday 46-24.
“Thompson Falls has beena good team for our schedule,” Thompson said. “We are lucky we got to play them and I thought we played well.”
The Vikings’ shots were good as three Vikings hit three-pointers.
“We also had a little bit of an inside game, too,” he said.
After a nine-point first quarter, the Vikings cranked things up to score 20 in the second and 13 in the third.
Kelley scored 19 points, eight in the second quarter, and Pope added 10.
“Offensivley, [Pope] is doing great things for our team,” Thompson said.
The Vikings travel to Phillipsburg tonight and St. Regis tomorrow night. Both teams have new coaches, but Phillipsburg returns four players.
“St. Regis has been a little short on numbers,” Thompson said. “We aren’t really sure what to expect.”
Arlee went on to face another top team on Saturday against Hot Springs and lost 41-29.
“We played better against Hot Springs then we did against Charlo,” Bachmeier said. “We are not shooting the ball well right now.”
The Scarlets were down 33-17 at the half and managed three points in the third quarter.
Ivanoff scored 10 and Adams netted seven.
Bachmeier said his team did better on defense than on offense.
“On defense, we played well,” he said. “On offense, we didn’t play well.”
Leading the defense was senior Chelsea Allaire and Ivanoff.
“They are probably our two best defenders right now,” Bachmeir said. “But, its experience they have.”
Hendren is another player that has been consistent for Bachmeier.
“Not many people notice her,” he said. “She’s steady; a solid ball player.”
Freshman Karleigh Bolin added extra support when she came off the bench.
“She played solid defense for us, she’s learning,” Bachmeier said.
Arlee will travel to Seeley on Friday and Noxon on Saturday.
“We are a lot better than we were a month ago,” Bachmeier said.
