Flathead Valley Community College kicks off spring semester Monday with hundreds of credit courses including many scheduled in the evening.

Popular returning classes include Mandarin Chinese and emergency medical technician basic courses. Wilderness ecology, grant writing, tile making and high-intensity interval training represent some new offerings.

Instructional Technology Specialist Jared Schaajle teaches Mandarin Chinese providing a foundation of Mandarin Chinese speaking and basic reading and writing skills. Students also study ancient and modern Chinese history, food, clothing, festivals, art, music and theater along with Confucius and his  influence in China. The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.

Paramedicine instructor and Smith Valley Fire Department Emergency Medical Services Capt. Kris Long offers a condensed version of the emergency medical technician basic course geared toward those with prior training and experience. Scheduled Jan. 27 to March 5, the class takes place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Students need proof of immunizations on the first day of class to schedule clinicals.

Those interested in the college’s paramedicine program may enroll in the semester-long emergency medical technician basic course, a prerequisite of the program.

An introduction to trauma medicine, the class prepares students for the  emergency medical technician-basic certification examinations. 

 Paramedic Instructor Dan Miller teaches the class Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m.

Registration for spring classes takes place on campus Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Feb. 5 or by calling 756-3852.
