POLSON — After a lull at the holiday break, the Polson girls’ basketball team is back on track, winning two games: 52-45 against Eureka and 49-38 against Libby.

Last Thursday, Polson pulled away with a 21-point second quarter.

Head coach Randy Kelley said Eureka ran a 1-2-2 defense against the Pirates and got in the passing lanes.

Sophomore Riley Kenney led with 14 points, nine coming in the second quarter, while senior Nicole Davey added 11.

Playing teams from classes other than their own, the Pirates are able to see the different defense that might pop up on the way to state, Kelley said.

On Saturday, the Pirates contained Libby senior Jackie Mee to six points with box plus-one strategy. Junior Sierra Pete was the plus-one and was attached to Mee.

“Wherever [Mee] went, Sierra was in her hip pocket,” Kelley said.

The strong defensive effort held Libby to 38 points, as the Loggers were averaging 50 points in a game.

“It also helped to limit Mee,” he said.

Kenney and Davey each had a double-double. Kenney had 13 points and 10 rebounds as Davey had 14 points and 15 rebounds.

“Kenney had a huge weekend,” Kelley said.

The Pirates hosted Flathead on Tuesday and scores were unavailable at press time. They will host Whitefish on Saturday.
