The Troy City Council is in need of another member – and quick.

Mayor Don Banning announced this past Wednesday night that Larry Coryell had turned in a letter of resignation effective immediately.

“We had a work meeting last night (Tuesday) and he sat through it and turned it in at the end of the meeting,” Banning said.

The letter was straightforward with a simple announcement that he was resigning from his elected seat and all committee assignments. Coryell had two years remaining on his term.

Coryell said that his resignation was a result of a "procedural disagreement with the mayor."

As of Monday morning, Banning had not received any letters of interest for the position.

With two years on the council under his belt, Coryell had the most experience of the four-member council. Phil Fisher and Fran McCully, who ran uncontested in last fall’s election, took office at the beginning of the month. A third member, Gary Rose, was appointed at the same time to replace Banning.

Complicating matters is that Rose will be out of town for six weeks beginning Feb. 1. As a result, the city council must have another member lined up or there will not be a quorum to vote during meetings.

“We will still have a meeting (in February), but not a quorum, so we won’t be able to make any decisions,” Banning said.

The city began advertising right away and Banning said e-mails were sent out on the vacancy this past Wednesday.

Coryell was elected to the seat in the November 2007 general election – getting the most votes out of the four candidates. He took office in January 2008.
