SUNNYSIDE — Taking on a veteran and taller team, the Moses Lake Christian Academy Lady Lions knew they would be up against it when taking on 1B’s fifth-ranked Sunnyside Christian Knights.

In the end, the senior dominated hosts pulled away from the young Lady Lions in a 56-20 win last night.

The Academy (8-5) fell behind quickly to their hosts and dug a large 21-4 hole in doing so.

A six-for-17 free throw performance — many of which came in first half — stemmed any chance for a comeback.

“We could have been in the game if we hit our free throws in the first half,” Lady Lions coach Bryce McPartland said. “We never really recovered after that first quarter. We gave up way too many points with our current scoring capacity.”

The Knights held a 33-14 lead at halftime and then ensured the win behind a 15-2 performance in the second half that sealed the Lady Lions’ second consecutive loss.

“The biggest difference in this game was we didn’t respond to them being an extremely physical team,” McPartland said. “They are an extremely veteran team with seven seniors and had multiple girls that were 5-foot-11 and we couldn’t counter that.”

Melissa Verhage led the Lady Lions with eight points and four rebounds.

The Academy also committed 24 turnovers.

Othello 47, Connell 46

CONNELL — Snatching victory from defeat from victory, the Othello Huskies escaped with a 47-46 win at Connell on Tuesday night.

Kylee Mollotte was the hero, putting in a lay-up off of a teammate’s missed free throw attempt with six seconds left to give the Huskies (5-7) the win.

Connell missed a last-second shot that would have given them the win.

Mollotte finished with 21 points and nine rebounds.

“We had to find a way to win after being up 13 points and seeing Connell fight back to take the lead,” Othello coach Laurie Stickel said. “We’re always happy with a win,”

Othello lead 43-30 at the end of three quarters but fell into a slump scoring only two points until Mollotte’s heroics saved their squad.

Tiffany Martinez added 10 points for Othello which have won two of their last three games and four of their last six over the past three weeks.
