Art Spirit Gallery reveals new show

The Art Spirit Gallery, 415 Sherman Avenue, has a new show starting next week. The show is "Mel McCuddin: Desperate Measures" with 57 new oil paintings. The opening reception is on Friday, July 9 from 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Downtown ArtWalk. The public is welcome. The show runs from July 9 to Aug. 7.

On Saturday, July 10, McCuddin will give a painting demonstration in the gallery from 1-3. "This is a great opportunity to see his unique way of finding an image within the paint," according to a press release.

Boyington film at Oshkosh show

The documentary "Pappy Boyington Field" has been invited to the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh air show in Wisconsin. In his later years Pappy Boyington would attend the Oshkosh airshow as a guest, and for days would have lines of fans to autograph his best-selling book "Baa Baa Black Sheep."

"It is a privilege to have my film included as entertainment at this prestigious aviation venue," wrote director and producer Kevin Gonzalez. The film will be shown three dates in late July during the air show.It tells the story of the grassroots effort to honor a World War II hero in the town of his birth, with a commemorative air field naming.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department will host "Outdoor Movie Night" in the City Park bandshell on July 23 at dusk, about 8:30 p.m.The evening will kick off with the master of ceremonies Chief Wayne Longo welcoming families to the park. He will then introduce a Drug Free and Character Education presentation by Officer Tom Sparks, formerly of the DARE program. At twilight, the large movie screen will be filled with the cartoon "Barnyard."

Families are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, picnic baskets, and then sit back and enjoy the movie. The local Kiwanis are providing free popcorn.Police officers will be in attendance meeting and greeting children.

"We are excited about hosting an event to help draw families into City Park in the early evening hours," said Police Chief Wayne Longo. "Our hope is this becomes a traditional event for our citizens."A second outdoor movie night is planned for Aug. 13. The movie title is yet to be announced.

Coolin Bay gallery to feature Wakeley paintings

The luminescent, contemporary paintings of Tom Wakeley will be featured at the Entree Gallery at Coolin Bay during the July 1-31 showing, "Light, Color and Priest Lake". Inspired by the Impressionists and 20th Century Modernists, the Priest Lake artist uses light, abstract shapes, palette-knife work and broad, loose brush strokes to create his regional landscapes and occasional still-lifes.

For Wakeley, who prefers to paint on location, the application and textures of the paint itself is as important as the image in capturing a mood.

The Coolin Bay gallery will host a reception for Wakeley on July 17, 1-3 p.m.The Entree Gallery, now at two locations, invites the public to view the work of over 150 regional artists. The gallery at Reeder Bay is 2 miles east of Nordman at 1755 Reeder Bay Road, and can be contacted at (208) 443-2001.

A local author will be signing copies of her book from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in Priest Lake. B.J. Campbell, who wrote "Close Calls: The True Tales of Cougar Bob," which chronicles the adventures of her husband, Bob Campbell, will be at Julie's Gift House noon to 3 p.m.

There will be local authors of other books also signing books.The gift shop is 26 miles north of Priest River, just off Highway 57.
